TE 802 - Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practices I

Instructors - Dr. Ameila Gotwals and Dr. Joyce Parker

Description - This class was taken in conjunction with my student teaching. During it I was able to think about best practices for teaching science content to my students. Furthermore, I was able to discuss pedagogical techniques with other interns, which helped me become a more prepared teacher. Lastly, through weekly journal writing I was able to give thought to the lessons I taught, which showed me how important it is to be reflective as a teacher.

TE 803 - Professional Roles and Teaching Practice II

Instructor - Jay Meeks

DescriptionThis was the second semester class during my internship year. Throughout this class I was able to look at how to use student ideas to drive instruction during my four week long teaching cycle in which I taught a unit on stoichiometry. Analyzing the data allowed me to see how critical it is to use student ideas as often as possible. I was also able to visit classrooms of other interns and watch them teach a lesson. This was a valuable time for me because it gave me the opportunity to observe teachers outside of my building.

TE 804 - Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practices II

Instructors - Dr. Ameila Gotwals and Dr. Joyce Parker

DescriptionThis class was invaluable during my internship year because it allowed me to discuss problems and successes with other interns in different disciplines. I also looked at how teachers can work with one another in order to plan cross-curricular lessons. I was able to reflect on my classroom practices through our weekly discussions and able to implement some of the strategies that were discussed in regards to working with educators from different subject areas. I always remember this class when I am working with my colleagues outside the science department.

TE 831 - Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology

Instructor - Dr. Douglas Hartman

Description - Throughout this class I learned various educational technology theories including Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK), and Social Construction of Technology (SCOT). I also looked at how teachers can incorporate technology in the classroom to meet the needs of their students – I created a vodcast in order to see this first hand. The class made me rethink the way I deliver content to my students, since they have grown up in a digital age and are so accustomed to technology. After taking this class I am more comfortable, and willing, to use technology in my classroom.

ED 800 - Concepts in Educational Inquiry

Instructor - Dr. Steven Weiland

Description - This self-paced course was focused around the philosophy of education and educational inquiry. I was encouraged to read books, articles and use hypermedia in a way that I previously had not. It allowed me to realize the importance of being reflective in my teaching practice by comparing different viewpoints on educational topics.

CEP 883 - Psychology of Classroom Discipline

Instructor - Dr. My Lien

Description - Classroom management is a skill that teachers can learn and adapt. Through this course, I discovered proactive approaches that allow me to manage student behavior and increase student motivation. Each week I read a case study about a student or class with various discipline issues and discussed with classmates possible methods to correct the behavior. My culminating project allowed me to create a comprehensive classroom management plan that I still currently use in my classroom.

Fall 2015

TE 861B - Inquiry, Nature of Science and Science Teaching

Instructor - Dr. Amelia Gotwals

Description - During this course, I looked exclusively at the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and how teachers can use inquiry to teach science. I revamped a unit on density that I had taught for years but instead used the philosophies I learned in class about NGSS and inquiry to guide me. I also observed veteran teachers utilize the Ambitious Science Teaching Framework to help their students think deeply and formulate ideas about various science concepts. This class was critical to my growth as a professional, and I have instilled many of the principles I studied into my classroom.

Spring 2015

TE 846 - Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners

Instructor - Dr. Sandro Barros

Description - This class revolved around best practices for teaching literacy. At first, I wasn’t sure if this class was going to be useful because the class focused on early elementary literacy strategies. However, a lot of the concepts that are useful for younger students can be applied for high schoolers, as well. I completed a case study where I concentrated on the literacy skills of a low performing student. In my lessons, I implemented the best practices that I learned throughout the course to help improve the students’ literacy skills.

Summer 2016

TE 890 - Independent Study

Instructor - Dr. Paul Kurf

Description - During this independent study I focused on three aspects of science education. First, I focused on how I can implement best practices for NGSS. Then I looked at two technology resources, PhET and The Concord Consortium, which teachers can use to help their students have a better understanding of the science that surround them. Lastly, I looked how teachers can help English Language Learners in their science classroom. This class allowed me to focus on the ideas that are critical to be a successful teacher at my school.

ED 870 - Capstone Seminar

Instructor - Dr. Matthew Koehler, Brittany Dillman, Spencer Greenhalgh, and Sarah Keenan

Description - As the culminating class of my Master of Arts in Education (MAED) program, the Capstone Seminar allowed me to reflect back on my time as a graduate student. I created a digital portfolio that allowed me to reflect on the work that I have completed that allowed me to become a better professional. We wrote three essays that had us look at our goals before entering the program, what goals we have when we complete the program, and an essay that had us look at what we really gained throughout the MAED. This class really put into prospective how much I learned about educational practices over the last five years.
